I have had to change my masthead name from ROCK CIRCUIT to ROCK Z, this is because when I attempted to put rock circuit at the top of the page it was too big so then I decided to put it in the corner in a box as I first planned but it didn't look professional because rock was bigger than circuit, so I decided to take inspiration from Q magazine and use a letter so I chose Z because my tagline is - Feel The Electricity! and Z looks like a lightning bolt/electricity so it replaces the word circuit very well.
I wanted to keep the word circuit in my magazine so I have decided instead of putting Contents Page at the top of my contents page I will write THE CIRCUIT as this would replace it quite well, as circuit can be the thread of news and what the magazine includes.

Research and Planning: Double Page Spread Layout Idea
I have chosen to look at a double page spreads layout so I can get an idea how a real magazine lays out their text and images etc, this will be important for me as I need to make my magazine look as professional and real as possible. I like how the image dominates one full page as it allows the reader to see the artist the article is about, I think putting a large quote is an effective technique as it will peak the readers interest and encourage them to read on. However on my double page spread I think I will put the artists name large instead of a quote as I think it's also important for the reader to know the artists name as they may not recognise the artist on the picture. I think the columns of text work really well here, they have used four whereas I would prefer to use three as it doesn't look as daunting to read.
Research and Planning: Music Magazine Front Cover Progress
I have started my front cover however I am not happy with how it looks as the masthead is too big so I think I need to use a smaller font and think about spacing.

Research and Planning: Hair Ideas For My Model
I like this style of hair as it is loosely dragged back into a pony but has loose parts of hair still arround the face which encircles the models face nicely, I think when a model has their hair up it allows you to focus more on the makeup which would be good in a rock magazine as they usually have intricate makeup that would be good to show.
I love this hair style as it suits my rock genre as it is loosely curled hair that is slightly ruffled and gives off the 'just woke up' impression, this is a simple look that is very effective. I could find a model with this hair colour, I think blonde mixed with the dark makeup looks good as they contrast, so both hair and makeup stand out in different ways. This messy style is one that would suit my genre so for my photoshoot I could recapture this hairstyle and use it on my model. Research and Planning: Pose Ideas For My Photoshoots
Although I wouldn't class this artist as rock she has captured a rock vibe in this photo, her outfit/costume fits my genre with the leather and chain look which makes the artist look edgy. I have selected this photo due to the pose, she is holding two awards/props on either side and projects a cool persona. Her stance is not forced as she seems relaxed, one knee slightly bens while the other seems straight and her hands are gripping the objects making the artist look fierce. I think a long shot looks good as we get to see the full outfir/pose this often gives the audience an opinion straight away. This will help me whilst taking photo's as I will have an idea of how I want my model to pose and I can then direct my model in what to do so that I get the look I want.
This is another pose I quite liked, this artist looks cool and laid backed. I like how the artist has used the guitar (a prop I'm using). He brings the guitar into the shot so we get an idea of what he plays, his head leans into the instrument making him and the guitar look like they are one together. The connotations of this would be that the guitar and the artist are part of eachother and he would be lost without it. The artist has a cigarette in his mouth and gives the camera a 'devil may care' look which a lot of people idolise. This pose will also help me in my photshoot as I now have an idea of how to incorporate the artist and instrument together.

Research and Planning: Double Page Spread Examples
This is a double page spread taken out of Q magazine:
I like this double page spread as I think it has been spaced out really well, on one page they have used a full picture of the band wheras the other page has writing and a small picture this creates a nice balance between text and photo's. The colours the band are wearing match the font colours this makes the spread seem smart and organized that has its own style. I really like the how they have made the title of the article black and bold as this is one of the first things you are instantly drawn to, the band is called Kings Of Leon and the title used is 'WE FOUR KINGS' this plays on the band name as the band members will be known as kings this instantly lets the audience know who the article is about, I am thinking about this for my own music magazine double spread as I want the title for my article to correspond with the artist and the picture shown so this will automatically create a story in theaudiences mind. They have used a medium shot of the artists this allows you to see the clothes they are wearing on the top half of their bodies but also gives you a closer look at the facial expressions than a long shot would. They have put a quote from the band in a bigger font which you look at first, the quotes are usually interesting or shocking so this makes the reader actually want to read the story, they have also put some of the quote in red which is colour suggesting danger/passion.
This is a double page spread taken from Kerrang magazine:
This double page spread shows an interview which is something I would think about doing for my double page spread. I like that this double page spread is completely different from the Q magazine one, this magazine has a different approach as they have a chaotic spreadwhere they use quite alot of pictures this allows them to put varied shots on the band on, including - long shot, medium close up etc. They have put the questions in a bigger/bolder font of white than the answer this looks really effective and I think I am going to do this in my magazine. The pictures seem to be telling a story of the band, the title 'HAIRY FAIRY TALES' reflect the band as they are dressed up in fairytale costumes like a knight and king this shows a connection between band and title. This shows me that the title for my article has to reflect/have a link to the picture of my artist that I take and include. They have took a quote from the interview and made it bigger, this helps to break up the text and gives it an edge, by enlarging a quote you are telling the audience to read the rest of the article as it will be interesting. I like how they have stuck to the rule of three- red, black and white these are all colours that emphasise the genre of rock and will help the audience know the genre instantly.

Research and Planning: Music videos
Research and Planning: Music Magazine Drafts
These are my annotated Front Cover and Contents Page that I have drawn after getting audience feedback, this will help me form my music magazine as now I can focus on things that appeal to my target audience. I feel these improvements will allow me to produce a good rock magazine.
Research and Planning: Model Head Shots
I think this model is good however I think she would be suited more to other genres such as folk however I think with the right makeup and expression she could do rock, she seems to be wearing not a lot of makeup which is a good thing as it would be easier to apply makeup from scratch to get the lot I want. I would but her in a colour like black to make her hair stand out more, I could curl her hair and backcomb it to create a wild rock look therefore this is a model I could use but I'm not going to.
This model could be appropriate with the right makeup/costume, she has a unique look that would look good in a rock magazine. I think the model has a good hair colour, the red looks vibrant which I like, this would make her stand out on the cover. The clothing she has on is casual however the colour wouldn't suit my rock genre so I would put her in a dark colour that would look more rock.
This model could be suitable for my magazine as she has the right style, her hair looks like a rock artists as it has two colours- black and pink which makes her seem punk rock, her makeup on this photo is dark eyeliner which is one thing I would include in my makeup that I put on my model. So this model already has some of the things I want my model to have so I wouldn't have to do much work with her look therefore I could use her for my magazine.
This model wouldn't be suitable for my magazine because as he hasn't got a rock look, he seems to be suited more for a pop/folk genre. Also his expression would be wrong for my magazine as he looks very happy; for a rock magazine I feel the model needs to have a moody expression thats unique to the artist. For my magazine I would prefer a female model so I will not be using the male model above.

Research and Planning: Mise-en-scene
I have looked at what Mise-en-scene Q magazine creates when they have photo shoots for artists. In this particular photo the background is set out like a police arrest however it would be plain white without the black height lines behind the artists, this helps the artists stand out because if the background was too busy it would take away from the artist and focus more on the setting. I like the mise-en-scene created here as it makes the artists seem dangerous and gives us an impression of the artists just by putting in sign props and the police setting.
This is an interesting mise-en-scene, they have used a landscape long shot so we get a vast view of the artist and the setting. I like the use of furniture and animals in this photo and I think I could apply this to one of my photo shoots. This shoot isn't to busy and creates a laid back atmosphere which I think is effective. I think the lighting is really well used here and I like how the furniture and panthers create shadows.
This mise-en-scene is focused on the background a lot as they have a good landscape shot of a natural environment but have then put in the car prop which is man made and contrasts to the setting. The car prop looks old and busted hence the smoke coming up from behind the car, the artists are stood on the car which is a rockstar thing to do and gives off a care free vibe.

Research and Planning: SLR Test Shots
I like this photo, this was taken inside with the flash on and the quality of the photo is very good, its clear and focus's well on the models facial expressions. I want to use a medium close up for my cover which is why I decided to practice this shot on the camera. This is better than the photos for my college magazine because its a lot clearer, the college photo taken is bad quality and sets a dull lighting which doesn't appeal to people, the college photo was also slightly distorted and didn't focus well whereas the SLR camera used in these shots are much better.
This photo was taken outside without a flash, I prefer the natural lighting in this, I took this photo looking up to get a low angle shot as I wanted to try out different kinds of shots with this camera. The photo is clear and includes both the setting and the model, this would work in my magazine as setting is important to as this also tells a story about the artist.
This was taken outside, the lighting is good in this as it sets a natural ambiance. I took this shot with the SLR camera from a higher angle so I can capture the model moving and see the body language of the model. This shot is a long shot, so it doesn't focus on the face but on all the body language which has the power to get certain messages across to the reader of my magazine, in this each step she climbs is another step in her 'rock career.
This photo was taken inside with the flash on so it creates artificial light. I like this medium close up shot as the background is slightly blurred however the model is very clear which makes her stand out and seem more important.
This is one of the photo's I took that didn't go right and was Trial&Error. I took this outside with the flash on and its made the model very white therefore I know to rely on the natural lighting when taking photos outside.
This was a photo I took inside the lighting is bad in this and creates a dull sheen. I was practicing zooming with the SLR camera however it went out of focus and became blurred which means the model wasn't clear and the medium shot didn't highlight facial expressions or clothes very well.

Research and Planning: Location Ideas
This is Hyde Park. I like this location has it has a huge lanscape which means I can take photos in numeral places and not be confined in just one area. I think its good that this is a natural environment which means I can use the trees and leaves etc.
This is Newton for Hyde train station. I was thinking of doing my photshoot here for it would create an eerie atmosphere at night when the station is locked and the tracks are empty, in the station they have an alley with low lights and also a set of stairs which are very creepy which I think would suit a rock magazine.

Research and Planning: Rock Official Chart
This is BBC- Radio 1 Official Rock Top 40 Chart. This will aloow me to see the favourite rock bands and artists of the Country.
39 Foo Fighters - Best Of You
Research and Planning: Target Audience Favourite Rock Bands
I have asked the target audience for my rock magazine what are there favourite rock bands and artists so that I will be able to try and use an artist that will appeal to them.
The band above is Paramore. The main singer Hayley Williams is stood slightly infront which allows us to see she is the lead, the band members are all wearing casual clothes so there is a chilled out vibe reflected in this picture, the poses are all natural stances - hands in pockets, arms at side and crossed arms this allows the band to see normal people who the fans can connect with.
This band is The Killers. This band is all male which is typical rock as it is dominated by male artists. The band members are all in smart wear- suits however seem to have casual shoes on - converse. The outfit choices show a contrast in the sides to the band they are professional yet care free, the picture allows us to see two sides of this band. The setting seems to be in a park that has trees and a pathway, I like that the band are in business wear but in a casual setting.
This is Florence Welch aka Florence and The Machine. I like this image as she has been placed in a colourful setting yet seems to be in dark colours. She looks typical rock with the black and white lace top and many necklaces and the makeup is thick eyeliner and dark lipstick thus giving off a rock image. It looks as if shes in a campavan which is a place where rock artists typically wake up in, its as if she doesn't know where she is and doesn't belong there.
This is The Rolling Stones. I like this photo as the band seem to be stood in the middle of the road where cars drive giving us a image of danger however they seem to not free the traffic as if they are saying 'I'm not bothered' this makes us feel they are a care free sort of band.
This is Jimi Hendrix. I like that the photo is in black and white. He is smoking in this photo which makes him seem a free spirit who does as he pleases, the smoke blows in his face and he doesn't seem to care. A rockstar with habits such as smoking.
This is Kings Of Leon. I love this photo as the band are all in casual wear and in a casula setting they come across as normal people which allows people to relate to them. The clothes are mostly jeans, vests and T-shirts, thus also making them seem care free and laid back people. They all seem to have long hair which is a typical rockstar look. The setting is in the woods, maybe reinforcing the idea that they are natural and don't need any gimmicks.
This is Led Zeppelin. This is old school kind of rock, this is reflected by the fashion. I like the poses of the band as they all seem to be leaning on the care, one member has his arm around the other which gives off friendly vibes. None of them are looking at the camera so they aren't directly making a connection with the audience however it looks more natural.
This is Fall Out Boy. This photo is good for its use of props - guitars and drum sticks, it seems to give off the rock image of rockstars smashing up hotel rooms with istruments as one member is holding it up as if he's going to hit something with it. They are all in casual sorts of clothes which gives a more approachable look however they have quite moody expressions on there faces so it doesn't project friendliness straight away.
