Research and Planning: Equipment and Software List
For my Magazine I will need these pieces of equipment and software:
- IMac
- Photoshop
- InDesign
- A Camera
- IPhoto
Research and Planning: Prop and Costume List
These black skinny jeans are from river island for £42.00
This vest top is £15.00 from River Island, I will not be using this exact top but I will be using a top of this style.
I will be using a guitar that I already have.
My model will be wearing heels on the cover, I like these ones as they suit the rock genre of my magazine. These high heels are £65 from River Island.
This is a leather and print maxi dress from Miss Selfridges for £120.
This is the sort of style I want my model to have in my photoshoots; the clothes may not be exactly the same as above however I want it to be similar as I feel it has a good rock vibe and is what a female rock artist would wear.

Research and Planning: Double Page Spread Analysis
Genre: I can tell the genre of this double page spread is indie rock by the colours used - red and black these are typical colours for a rock magazine.
Target Audience: I'd say the target audience is both genders as I feel both men and women would be interested in this artist which is featured, there is a certain sex appeal about Lady Gaga. I think this would appeal to an older audience due to the image used which would be quite inappropriate for younger readers therefore i think the age is seventeen to mid twenties. The audience will be interested in this artist so the target audience would listen to this kind of music.
Layout: One of the pages of the double page spread is covered with a photograph, a medium close up has been used so we get to see the emotion on the artists face and relate to the artist more.I think the use of the the red capital L attracts the reader straight away and makes them want to read whats underneath. The text on the right page is set out in three straight columns, which makes it easy to follow, the capital black letters are in a bigger font which shows its a new point and more important. They have a heading at the top of the page which shows the reader straight away who the double page spread is about.
Media Language: The picture of Lady Gaga is a medium close up and also an eye level shot, this shows her chest up because she hasn't got many clothes on so cannot use a long shot as they are usually used to show the clothes worn. The medium close up focus' on her face, the eye level shot makes us seem on her level and doesn't make her seem intimidating.
Representation: The photo is is used to crate a sexual vibe, as the artist is touching her chest and hasn't got any clothes on, she seems to just be wearing chains which doesn't hide much of her body. The background is just white which makes it seem a cool atmosphere.

Research and Planning: Contents Page Analysis
Genre:
The genre of this magazine seems to be indie/rock, I can tell this by the story headlines e.g. 'Rock Star Fitness' etc the main picture used is of 'The Courteeners' this allows us to see what type of bands/artists are represented within the magazine. The style isn't sharp and in your face, it seems to be quite calm, all this things help to understand what genre it is.
Target Audience:
I think the target audience is aimed at mainly males as they use colours such as red, black and white that appeal to men more than women, and are masculine colours. The artists used e.g. Oasis and The Courteeners are male bands, they don't have any female artists listed. the contents page doesn't seem to have any stories that would reach out to a female audience, the story headlines seem to be biased towards men e.g. 'Paul Heaton' and 'The Q List', the stories include things about fitness which appeals more to men, they don't include stories about fashion etc which attract women. The age range seems to be 18-25 year olds.
Layout:
The layout seems to be really organized, the features all appear in a straight column and stay within the box and the review at the bottom is been placed in a rectangle, so this magazine seems to be very square and precise however you wouldn't say the same about the artists who probably are messy etc, the control in the layout may be used to highlight the lack of control in the rock stars lives. The colours show who the target audience and the contents page sticks to the rule of three about colours and doesn't go over the top, this makes it look quite professional. The fonts are sized to match the importance of the text e.g. the story headline may be size 16 however the information about the story headline may be size 12 as it isn't as important.
Representation:
The band seem to be laid back, they have their hands in their pockets which gives off the care free vibe, and the main man has glasses on so we don't get to have any eye contact. The band have messy hair and seem to be wearing casual t-shirts with skinny jeans this makes them look like normal people so we can relate to them more. They look quite cool and this makes you want to know more about them as a band, however none of them are smiling which makes them look quite moody.
Media Language:
This is a long shot of the band so we get a clear view of who they are

Research and Planning: My Target Audience
My Target Audience ^
Age: I want my magazine to be aimed at 17 - 25 year olds
Gender: The gender audience would be dominated by a male audience however females would like to read it too
Occupation: My audience will be studying at college or university and probably have part time jobs that don't pay very well
Class: They will be working class to middle class
Wealth: They may not be earning alot at they are currently in education so my magazine would have to be a reasonable price
Interests: My audience would have a certain interest in music and are maybe aspiring bands, they would like to socialize and be quite outgoing people who go to gigs etc
Outlook for the future: hey would maybe have a music related job , a diverse range of people who like that sort of music will have a varied range of jobs, because they are in further education they will be wanting to be in better jobs
How are you going to reach them? : I plan to reach my audience by using things that interest them e.g. cheap festivals/tours, I will aim things specifically at students, I will keep the price quite low by using paper pages and a glossy cover, I will use colours that represent both genders but mostly males.

Research and Planning: Music Magazine Analysis 2

Q Magazine - I think this magazine is Alternative Rock, i can tell by the artists names that are shown and the layout of the cover, it follows the three colour rule of red, black and white which are colours that attract both a male and female audience. This is a long shot of the artist Florence Welch i think they have used this as it shows off her whole body, they have placed her in a black costume that shows off her leg and body giving off a sexy image. Her bright red hair gives us the impression shes quites fierce and is ready to take on anything. They have set her standing in/ontop of the wonders of the world such as the statue of liberty and the eiffel tower, making her seem one of the wonders. She is in colour whereas the buildings are in black and white therefore she stands out for the background and makes her seem unique. They have represented her as being really confident here this makes us want to be like her.
I think the target audience for this magazine is unisex, 18-30 years old because they don't sem to advertise alot of things which younger audiences would usually go for, this magazine is for people who really enjoy music and want the latest news.
The masthead Q stands out as it is framed in a box and only slighty overlapped by the photo, the box is red which is a bold colour and the first thing we'd look at therefore letting us know whose magazine it is straight away. Alot of bylines are in capital letters showing that it is more important than other parts of the cover. They have included stories such as 'THE 100 GREATEST FRONT MEN' this immediatly makes us want to know who are the best front men in bands which encourages us to buy the magazine.
Research and Planning: Music magazine analysis
The genre of the magazine covers a range of music - rock, indie, rap and hip-hop, I think this cover is more indie rock, the people on the cover give me this impression they all seem to follow a certain style. The font is all in capitals because all the text on the front is trying to attract the reader to buy this magazine, we know which text is more important from the font size e.g. The Horrors is in bold because they are the main artists in this magazine. There are four colours used on the front - yellow, red, black and white, all these colours stand out and match the target audience. The stories on the cover are things such as 'Arctic Monkeys arty with P Diddy in Miami' these are stories that attract the reader because by giving information about the artists lives you may feel closer to them and that you almost know them. The photographs are based around the side stories, the main photo is the main artist which attracts the reader to the magazine.
The Horrors are being represented quite well in this magazine, the story is called 'The psychedelic return of the horrors' this makes us want to read about them, there return seems interesting and we want to get to know why they have returned and where they have been, therefore making us want to read on. They are all wearing black shirts/suits which makes them look quite professional and tells us they mean business, the colour black is quite mysterious and dangerous, this encourages us to buy the magazine. They appear to have quite a fierce attitude, some of the band have direct eye contact with the camera and we feel they are looking right at us, whereas the member at the back seems to be laughing which shows us the different sides of the band making them seem quite diverse.
I think the target audience of the magazine would be mostly males due to the colour used, red seems to be quite a manly colour however the band on the front would attract many females so we end up with a multi-sex audience. I think they target the age range between 16-30 years old as it seems to be modern and up to date meaning people in that age range will relate to it and understand the things said.
A medium shot is being used of the band, as a long shot would make the band seem distant and a close up would be too personal therefore a medium shot is appropriate for the audience. The cover photo doesn't create much mise-en-scene because the artists haven't been given a prop to work with etc, they have basically been placed on a white background that highlights their shadows maybe representing their dark sides. I think they have been placed like that because its giving off a simple image, they don't need any props or setting as the band are good as they are and don't need any gimmicks. The lighting is well on the photo, the radiant white background contrasts really well with the black clothes they are wearing. The masthead NME has been placed between bylines and photos so it doesn't stand out as well as it should however it is the only text in red, so it differs and makes it more important. There is a explosion of paint at the back of The Horrors story, which make them seem the new splash and what we should all be talking about.
